Living in Seoul as an expat is an exciting adventure, but there's one thing that almost everyone struggles with at first: Recycling. With strict rules for plastics, paper, cans, and even food waste, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
In Korea, we don't just "throw things away"—we carefully sort them to protect the environment. Here is everything you need to know to handle waste disposal like a local!
Understanding the Discharge System
In Seoul, waste disposal rules can vary slightly depending on your district (Gu) and the type of housing you live in.
- Apartment Complexes: Most apartments have dedicated recycling centers within the complex. Many allow for "anytime disposal," and you can always ask the security guard (Gyeongbi-ajeossi) if you're confused about where a specific item goes.
- Villas and Houses: If you live in a villa or a traditional house, you must place your trash in front of your gate or at a designated spot nearby. Collection happens on specific days and times. To find your neighborhood's schedule, visit your local District Office (Gu-cheong) website and look for the "Waste Collection Schedule" (우리동네 배출요일 확인하기).
The "Jongryangje" (Pay-As-You-Throw) System
You must purchase official, pre-paid trash bags at local supermarkets or convenience stores.
- General Waste Bags: Used for non-recyclable items.
- Food Waste Bags: Used specifically for food scraps.
- Note: Bag colors vary by district, so make sure you are using the correct one for your specific area!
Step-by-Step Sorting Guide
1. Plastic Bottles (PET)
- Empty and rinse the bottle.
- Remove the label completely.
- Flatten the bottle by stepping on it to save space.
- Dispose of clear PET bottles in a separate transparent bag as required by Seoul’s strict "Transparent PET Bottle" policy.
2. Cardboard & Delivery Boxes
- Remove all shipping labels (containing your personal info) and packing tape.
- Flatten the boxes completely. (If they are large, fold or tear them down into manageable flat pieces.)
3. Vinyl & Plastic Wrappers
- Remove any sticky tape or food residue.
- For snack bags or ramen packets, do not fold them into knots. Keep them flat and clean before putting them in the vinyl recycling bin.
4. Cans & Glass
- Rinse out any leftover liquid or food.
- Flatten cans if possible to minimize volume.
5. Hazardous Waste (Batteries & Gas)
- Batteries: Never throw these in general waste. Use the "Waste Battery Collection Boxes" found in apartment lobbies, community centers, or near subway entrances.
- Butane Canisters: Ensure they are empty by pressing the nozzle. Safely punch a hole in the side before placing them in the metal recycling bin.
6. Expired Medicine
- Do not flush pills or syrups down the drain. Take them to a nearby pharmacy (Yak-guk), community center, or local health clinic for safe disposal.
The Golden Rule: Food Waste vs. General Waste
This is the part that confuses everyone! The easiest way to remember is: "If an animal can eat it, it's food waste."
- General Waste (Standard Bag): Hard materials like chicken/beef/pork bones, eggshells, clam/oyster shells, fish bones, fruit pits (like peach or cherry stones), onion and garlic skins, corn husks, and green onion roots.
- Food Waste (Food Bag): Soft materials like apple, orange, banana, and watermelon peels. These are processed into animal feed or fertilizer, so they must be kept clean of non-food items.
Final Thoughts
"As a foreigner, it might be tempting to think, 'Does my small effort really matter?' However, for the sake of our planet, the environment, and the future of our children, I would be so grateful if you could join us in these small actions. Please remember—your contribution is never too small to make a difference."
